Marksmanship

Marksmanship is the skill of precision shooting; a marksman is a person who is skilled at it. The term applies to both firearms (gunnery) and archery. The word emerged in the Middle Ages, originally referring to the royal archers or bowmen of a palace guard around the 10th century. Accurate shooting is built on a small set of repeatable fundamentals: a stable body position, correct sight alignment and sight picture, The Natural Respiratory Pause: Why Shooters Exhale Before Firing, Trigger Control, and follow-through. Establishing a consistent Natural Point of Aim lets the shooter rely on skeletal support rather than muscle, reducing the body movement that throws off a shot. These principles are why shooters fire during the relaxed pause in their breathing and squeeze the trigger straight back rather than jerking it. In the American military and civilian shooting tradition, proficiency is graded in recognized tiers: unqualified, marksman, sharpshooter, and expert. In U.S. military usage, "marksman" is specifically a rating below sharpshooter and expert. A military marksman is normally an organic part of a fireteam and is not expected to operate independently, which distinguishes the role from a sniper, who works alone or in a small team with independent objectives. As an illustration of the upper limits of the skill, the longest recorded competition rifle shot — about 3.78 kilometres (2.35 miles) — was made in Kansas in March 2021, with the bullet in flight for roughly 9.4 seconds.
