They settled on stannous fluoride (SnF₂), which stayed soluble in a compatible calcium pyrophosphate abrasive system and released fluoride ions on contact with saliva. The key clinical trial enrolled about **12,000 schoolchildren in Indiana** ('Hoosier kids'), ages 6–16. Results showed a **49% reduction in cavities** compared to controls — large enough that the American Dental Association eventually endorsed the formulation, the first toothpaste to receive that recognition. Muhler donated half his royalties to the Indiana University Foundation, where the proceeds funded decades of subsequent dental research. The Crest brand has since reformulated multiple times — most modern tubes use sodium fluoride or sodium monofluorophosphate with newer abrasive systems that avoided the original incompatibility problem.
